One percent...1%...of the citizens of the United States comprise the military forces protecting and serving the freedoms and way of life for the other 99%. Every day, the hearts and minds of these military personnel and their families recommit to paying the ultimate price for democracy. As Lt. Sconiers' widow, Bobelle, revealed to his niece, such price is enduring. Learning Sconiers' story and that his case had been reopened, she declared, "'Time heals all wounds' is not to be believed. You have ended a 60-year nightmare!"
That nightmare ended because of Promise Keepers. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency's Mr. Johnie Webb and Col. Chris Forbes, along with "Ewart's Army," researched and worked for ten long years to find Sconiers and bring him home.
Their incredible journey and the international attention and engagement it has generated illustrates the need for greater support, both for DPAA recovery efforts focused on the 80,000+ still missing, and for active duty personnel and veterans of today.
Promise Keepers is an initiative dedicated to constructive support of the efforts of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency as it seeks to provide to families and the nation the fullest possibleaccounting for America's missing service personnel from all conflicts. The initiative further extends to volunteer efforts on behalf of active duty military personnel and their families.
Promise Keepers Goals: Through partnerships with military-focused, not-for-profit organizations such as TAPS, USO, SOS, VFW, etc., Promise Keepers seeks to: (1) recognize and honor the sacrifices of military personnel and their families, as well as the selfless contributions of those in the U.S. and abroad who aid recovery efforts; (2) further information sharing and collaboration among viable research partners; (3) increase awareness of resources that support research, including government and genealogical data bases; (4) offer compassionate care to families grieving the loss of a military loved one; (5) nurture the emotional wellness of active duty personnel, their families, and families of the missing through assurance of America's promise to its personnel; (6) foster communications and information exchange with and among families as to resources to meet their myriad needs; (7) encourage the emerging international network of and collaboration among those who strive to help America keep its promise; and (8) offer comfort and hope "until they are home."
